Wednesday Night Study Sheet--Joshua 7

Main idea: First and tragic battle of Ai (sin in the camp).

Following the fall of the city of Jericho, "the sons of Israel acted unfaithfully in regard to the things under the ban", which was over the plunder of the city, excepting the "silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron" that were to be delivered to the treasury of the Lord. Achan, the son of Carmi, unbeknownst to the Israelites, had coveted and taken such articles for himself. Before this discovery, Joshua sent men to Ai to spy out the land. After the assessment, it was reported that only an approximate three thousand men were necessary to overthrow the city. The soldiers attacked, but soon retreated losing thirty-six men. God then revealed the transgression, and gave Joshua orders for discovering the offender, Achan. Following his conviction, Achan, "the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that belonged to him" were stoned, burned, and covered with a mound of stones "that stands to this day".

Challenge Question#1: The Valley of Achor is still around today. What is the meaning of the term "Achor"?

Challenge Question #2: Contrast what it meant that the man with the cursed idols had taken them home with him, as to what it would have meant if he had just paused for a little bit to worship the idols in the place in Jericho where he had found them.

Challenge Question #3: Apply your findings from Challenge Question #2 to today's life. How is it that today's Christians occasionally sin, but they do not live in sin?
