Wednesday Night Study Sheet--Joshua 1

On April 2 we began with a study of "Who was and who wasn't there?" at the beginning of the book of Joshua. Miriam, the sister of Moses, wasn't there, having died (Numbers 20: 1) in the desert as part of those who were over 20 at the time God pronounced the curse (Numbers 14: 29) at Kadesh. At Kadesh was the incident where the twelve spies were sent out to gather information about Canaan, the land that Israel was to soon occupy. Ten of the spies came back with a faithless and pessimistic report, but Joshua and Caleb came back saying "The Lord is with us; of course we can take it." At the time of the beginning of the book of Joshua, he and Caleb are all that were left of the people that had left Egypt forty years earlier for the promised land. Aaron, Moses' brother, had died in the wilderness (Number 20: 23-29). Moses is also not present at the beginning of Joshua, having been denied entrance to the Promised Land because of his part in the rebellion at Meribah (Numbers 20: 1-13).

The theme passage of this year for Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes is in Joshua 1: 16--"Jos 1:16 And they answered Joshua, "All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go." The humility that the Israelites had then is the humility and meekness that we should have now. Whatever the Lord commands, we will do with all our might.

Meekness is not weakness. Meekness (humility) is strength under control.
